Is a humidifier good for a baby?
A humidifier is optional, and any comfort benefit for a baby is uncertain. Learn the safety limits and when breathing problems or feeding much less than usual require NHS advice.

A humidifier is not something every baby needs. A cool-mist model may offer limited comfort when a baby has a blocked nose or the air feels very dry, but the evidence does not show a dependable benefit for symptoms, sleep or recovery.
It does not treat RSV, bronchiolitis, a cold, cough or congestion. If you choose to try one, safe sleep stays exactly the same, and careful water changes, cleaning and moisture control matter.
If your baby is struggling to breathe, call 999. If they are feeding much less than usual, ask for an urgent GP appointment or call NHS 111 rather than making further changes to the room.
Why the evidence for baby humidifiers is limited
Evidence for baby humidifiers is limited. Current evidence does not show that a room humidifier reliably improves a baby's congestion, sleep or recovery. Some international guidance suggests a limited comfort role, but that is different from evidence of treatment.
Possible comfort is not a proven treatment
The American Academy of Pediatrics says a cool-mist humidifier may be tried for comfort when a baby has a blocked nose. The US Environmental Protection Agency also notes that humidification can ease discomfort associated with very dry air. Neither source shows that a nursery humidifier clears congestion, makes a baby sleep better or shortens an illness.
A Cochrane review of heated, humidified air found inconsistent, low-quality evidence and no demonstrated benefit for treating the common cold. That review studied a different heated-air device, not a cool-mist nursery humidifier, so it adds to the uncertainty but does not answer whether a cool-mist room humidifier provides comfort.
What the evidence does not show
A baby's response to a humidifier cannot tell you why they are congested or whether an illness is mild. It is not a treatment for RSV, bronchiolitis, colds or coughs, and an apparent improvement while it is running does not confirm that a baby is well.
Parents who decide not to use a humidifier are not withholding an established respiratory treatment. If you do use one, treat it as an optional room appliance and keep medical decisions separate from how the room feels.
When congestion or breathing symptoms need medical help
Room adjustments cannot diagnose an illness. Use the following NHS routes if your baby has concerning breathing, feeding, hydration, fever or alertness changes.
You do not need to see every sign before calling. Do not wait to see whether a humidifier changes an emergency symptom.
When to contact an urgent GP or NHS 111
Ask for an urgent GP appointment or call NHS 111 if:
•your baby's cold or illness is getting worse
•they are feeding much less than usual
•they have had a dry nappy for 12 hours or show other signs of dehydration
•they are unusually tired, irritable or not their usual self
•you are worried
These routes follow current NHS bronchiolitis guidance and NHS fever guidance. They are symptom-based safety advice, not a way to diagnose bronchiolitis at home.
Fever and babies who may need advice sooner
Contact the GP surgery or NHS 111 if a baby under 3 months has a temperature of 38°C or higher, or if a baby aged 3 to 6 months has a temperature of 39°C or higher.
If your baby was born very prematurely, has a heart or lung condition, or has a weakened immune system, ask their clinician for individual guidance and seek help sooner if you are concerned. General humidifier advice does not create a special setting or routine for these babies.

How to use a humidifier without changing safe sleep
If you decide to use a humidifier, focus on preventing burns, keeping the sleep space clear and following the instructions for your model. There is no single evidence-based cot distance, shelf height or overnight rule.
Cool mist avoids a burn hazard, but is not risk-free
Warm-mist and steam appliances involve hot water or steam, which can cause scalds. Choosing cool mist avoids that particular burn mechanism, but it does not remove the need to manage standing water, cleaning, spills and excess moisture.
Cool mist is not proven to work better. The distinction here is about avoiding a hot-water or steam hazard around children, not promising stronger symptom relief.
Keep the sleep space clear
Follow NHS safer-sleep guidance for every sleep: put your baby on their back on a firm, flat mattress in a clear cot or Moses basket. Keep the humidifier outside the sleep space and out of your child's reach.
Follow the appliance instructions for placement
Use the manufacturer's instructions for your model to choose a stable position, direct the mist and manage cords and spills. Do not allow nearby bedding or other materials to become wet.
Because appliances and rooms differ, a generic distance or promise that a unit is safe to run all night would create false precision. Whatever the instructions say, keep the cot clear, the unit out of reach and nearby materials dry.
Water, cleaning and signs there is too much moisture
Careful use depends on managing the water and added moisture. Standing water can allow microorganisms to grow, and some cool-mist or ultrasonic models can disperse tank contents or minerals into the air. This is a reason for good maintenance, not a prediction that a particular baby will become ill.
Empty old water and follow the manufacturer's instructions
For a portable tank, empty old water, dry the tank and refill it with fresh water each day. Do not simply top up water that has been standing.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning, descaling and filter replacement. There is no one deep-cleaning interval or filter schedule that applies to every model.
Follow the manufacturer's guidance on which water to use. Low-mineral or distilled water may reduce scale or mineral dispersal in some ultrasonic or impeller units, but distilled water is not a universal requirement for every model or household.
Do not turn additives into remedies
Add nothing, including essential oils, fragrance or medication, unless the manufacturer's instructions for your model expressly permit it. Do not use an additive as a respiratory remedy. Ask a pharmacist or clinician about medication rather than putting it into a standard humidifier.
Reduce or stop use when condensation appears
If condensation appears or nearby bedding, walls or other materials feel damp, reduce or stop the added moisture. Do not keep the appliance running while you search for an ideal percentage.

Persistent damp or mould needs the underlying cause in the room or property to be addressed. GOV.UK guidance on damp and mould notes that children can be more vulnerable to its health effects. A humidifier may add moisture, but it is not fair or accurate to assume that every damp problem was caused by the family or the appliance.
The sources cited here do not establish a single humidity target for a baby's room. Visible condensation, wet materials, damp and mould are more useful action signals than an unsupported target number.
Stop if breathing symptoms seem linked to use
As a precaution, stop using the humidifier and seek clinical advice if breathing symptoms appear to start or worsen while it is running. This does not prove that the appliance caused the symptoms. Call 999 if any of the emergency signs above is present.
